Louis (Louie) Fernandez Alvarez was born in August 1924 to Andres and Agapita Alvarez and lived on 203rd Street. He was employed at the Columbia Steel Company in Torrance, left Torrance High School after a year and enlisted in the Army on March 12, 1943. He trained at Fort Knox with an armored unit.  PFC Louis Alvarez was sent to the Philippines where he was killed in action on Luzon on April 22, 1945.

The Torrance Herald newspaper reported at the time that he was planning on marrying a girl from Gardena upon his return from the war. He left behind many siblings and relatives in the Torrance area, including his brothers Sgt. Andres Alvarez Jr. and Pvt. Jesus Alvarez, in Germany and Italy, respectively, at the time.

Hundreds of friends and family went to the Alvarez home to express sympathy to the family. A memorial service for PFC Louis F. Alvarez was held at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and in 1948 a requiem mass was held for him with interment at the Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.
